  • Served as Treasurer of the One Mil Initiative for the first campaign and will serve as Vice-Chair for the 2020 campaign

  • Served on the Gainesville City Codes Enforcement Board

  • Served on the Gainesville City Plan Board

  • Graduated from the first class of Citizens on Patrol, a voluntary Gainesville Police Program

  • Served on the Board of the Alachua Conservation Trust, Inc.

  • Served as President of the Pleasant Street Neighborhood Association

  • Served as a Gainesville City Commissioner for District 2, 1996-1999

  • Served as Co-Chair of the Windsor Zucchini Festival, multiple years


  • Experience with conflict resolution, mediation and negotiations in my career as Director of the Alachua County Education Association, 1982-2020

  • Partner in two family-run businesses:  Calkins Design and Art Glass and Southern Inspection Services

  • Renovated, co-owned and managed three rental houses, one in each of Gainesville’s Historic Districts

  • Raises Registered Florida Cracker Cows at our ranch in Cross Creek, Florida

  • Owner of Dancing Cows Ranch, LLC an event venue in Cross Creek, Florida


  • Resident of Alachua County for 38 years

  • Married to Keifer Calkins for 46 years, one son, Keifer 

  • Keifer and Sande have been restoring barns, outbuildings and land in Cross Creek, Florida for the last few years

  • Recipient of the Florida trust for Historic Preservations’ “Home Restoration Award” in 1988

  • Recipient of several awards by the City Beautification Board

  • Recipient of the Frank Rathbun Memorial Award from Historic Gainesville, Inc.

  • Recipient of the Joe Broxton Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the Community and to the Labor Movement 1996
